Follow The Instructions

Tomorrow, I'll be approaching the completion of 3-weeks post-op! Exciting! I've moved from 1 week of complete silence, to 2 weeks of "1 minute on, 10 minutes off". Today, I was upgraded to 3 minutes of speaking at a time. I'm terrible with following instructions, I always have been. I chronically get lost while driving, I botch cooking recipes and I can't assemble a piece of Ikea furniture i...

Thinking is Underrated: The Top 5 Reasons to Shut Your Mouth

When you go about your normal routine in silence, you soon realize the societal limitations of non-verbal communication. Imagine checking out at the grocery store or withdrawing money at the bank without speaking. As you might expect, you begin to attract some very interesting stares; some simply inquisitive and some full of pity. In my first week of vocal silence, undoubtedly, peo...

Root Issues

Today I heard my voice for the first time since the operation. Have you ever tried to go for a run after you haven't exercised in a very long time, and you find that you have no stamina? You become winded. Your legs start to feel like jello and exhaustion sets in. Lactic acid builds up and you start to feel the burn earlier than you'd imagined. Although vivid, this is what it f...

“Ain’t Nobody Got Time For That”

I'm feeling like a kid all over again. There are very few times in my life that I can remember being able to overdose on ice-cream, without being scolded by my mother. Actually, this has never happened. It's the perk of feeling fire every time I swallow :-) I just arrived back from the hospital. If you're curious, let me catch you up: 1 year ago, I experienced a vocal hemorrhage after 6 wee...

So why am I excited about this fall? Well first of all I just moved out of my old house into a beautiful new home. Secondly, I've recently become a big sister to 2 beautiful little boys that have been adopt...

Happy summer :) News on the vocal front is that I'm doing much better.  From struggling just to make it through the day without losing my voice, to now just having to deal with some hoarseness....I've come a long way! I've been treating my voice veeeeeery well, in attempts to avoid surgery at all costs. I'm stayin happy! Thank...

Soft and Breathy!

Hey hey! So it's about 3 weeks after the fact and here's whats up. I went back to the Doc after the 7 days of silence and had a laryngoscopy done. (This time, she just stuck a tube down my throat. Not quite as painful but still very uncomfortable). After not speaking for 7 days, things looked much better and I was cleared to start talking again. As for singing, I'm safe to gig in a couple weeks...

Vocal Silence

May 5th 2012-  2:30pm Hey! So I obviously haven't blogged in a while. My apologies! But I figured I would update ya'll on recent happenings. I'm sitting in my sisters living room in my hometown of Pittsburgh, and I've been practicing complete silence for 5 days straight. Honestly, I haven't uttered a word,....not even a cough (orders from my doctor). Last Monday, I had a Nasoendoscope done....
